Magenta Magazine Online

The Magenta Foundation recently completed its busiest year yet. We expanded existing programs and spearheaded several new projects successfully. To make this growth possible, however, we had to put some things on the back burner.

In 2008, we temporarily shelved Magenta Magazine. We took this time to explore how we could make the best use of the magazine format and reach the largest audience possible. Today, we are pleased to announce that Magenta Magazine will be back in September 2009 in a new, more comprehensive online version.

Welcome to a sneak peek of Magenta Magazine Online!

We here at Magenta are pleased to introduce you to Bill Clarke, who has assumed the role of Executive Editor of Magenta Magazine Online. Bill has over 12 years experience working in the fields of publishing and communications. Some readers may also know Bill from his writing in esteemed art publications such as Modern Painters, Canadian Art, Border Crossings and, of course, Magenta Magazine, as well as his work as the curatorial co-chair for Art with Heart, a prestigious fundraiser for Casey House, a long-standing HIV/AIDs hospice in Toronto. Bill is an avid collector of contemporary art and has a special fondness for works on paper, artist’s books and multiples. Please join us in giving him a very warm welcome as we “soft launch” Magenta Magazine Online throughout the summer. Heading to the official launch in September 2009, Bill will oversee all online content. Everything from exhibition reviews, portfolio showcases, event coverage and artist interviews from the local Toronto visual arts scene and around the world will be chronicled here. As always, we welcome your feedback as we move forward and hope you enjoy this glimpse of what is to come.

Thank you to everyone for your patience and encouragement as we work toward Magenta Magazine’s relaunch. We know, from the overwhelming demand for its return, how important Magenta Magazine has become to the international arts community and how broad its readership is. We know you will be pleased with this exciting new direction.

06.18.09: Douglas Coupland opening at Clark + Faria, Toronto

Novels, visual art, television, theatre...is there anything missing from Douglas Coupland's resume? Since the early 2000s, Vancouver-based Coupland has gained a reputation as a visual artist who produces work that is crowd-pleasing, but casts a critical eye over our cultural landscape. This explains the turn-out at the opening of his latest exhibition. The works on view felt informed by American artists of the 1960s, and the material and sexual obsessions of young men. Savvy collectors made the opening night a near-sell out, which made us here at Magenta wonder what all this talk about a recession has been about.
