Susy Oliveira
Toronto-based Susy Oliveira creates images through a process of re-photographing constructions of both her own images and found material. The constructions are physically manipulated in an attempt to blur photographic notions of the digital by way of mimicking digital effects. Oliveira sees photography as “a material in my work, one that can be manipulated both through the camera as well as once it is printed. While my sculptural work attempts to bring the flat-photograph into three-dimensions, these works attempt to further flatten out the original photograph through negating the space inherent in the original constructions.”
Oliveira received an MFA from the University of Waterloo and is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art & Design. Her work has been exhibited in numerous venues, including the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto; the University of Waterloo Art Gallery; the Khyber, Halifax; PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts, Winnipeg and the Graphic Design Festival Breda, The Netherlands. She is the recipient of grants from the Toronto Arts Council, the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts. Her work has appeared in periodicals such as Hi-Fructose and Believer Magazine, and in the publications Papercraft: Design and Art with Paper and Papercraft2.
